Christmases That Never Left: The Heart of Palos Blancos

At the dawn of the 20th century, Onofre Méndez and Carlota Briones began a journey that would leave a lasting legacy. Settling in Palos Blancos, Sinaloa, Onofre dedicated himself to agriculture, transforming his land into a prosperous enterprise. His generosity extended beyond business—he treated his employees and their families kindly, earning their loyalty and respect.
In the 1970s, Onofre’s sudden passing left a deep void, but his memory endured. That same year, his children and grandchildren honoured him by establishing a cherished Christmas tradition, gifting toys, clothes, and food to the children of their employees. Many of these children lived in extreme poverty, never having owned a single toy. They were very poor, facing daily hardships, and had little to look forward to during the holiday season. The Méndez family sought to change that, to bring joy where there was none, to ensure that these children could smile and feel the magic of Christmas for at least one day. Over time, this celebration grew into a beloved town-wide event, filling Palos Blancos with joy.
As years passed, distance and life caused the tradition to fade. However, in the early 21st century, Alba Patricia Goldberg, Don Onofre’s devoted granddaughter, revived it with unwavering dedication. Through her efforts, the Méndez family home once again echoed with children’s laughter, rekindling a legacy of love, generosity, and unity.
Today, this tradition is more than a celebration—it is a testament to the Méndez family’s enduring spirit, ensuring that future generations will cherish the warmth, friendship, and joy that once defined their childhoods. Thank you, Alba Patricia, for reviving and creating new, cherished memories—for spreading happiness, hope, and friendship. Through the laughter of countless children, we glimpse the enduring smiles of Don Onofre and Doña Carlota, whose spirit lives on in the hearts of all who were once children and are now grandparents or great-grandparents.

A Tribute to the Workers Behind Our Meals

Despite all the technology and luxury around us, the hands that harvest our food still live without many of the comforts we take for granted. They work under the sun and in the rain, ensuring our tables are always full.

Their lives may lack luxury, but their food is rich in tradition and flavour. Because of them, we want to give back—a small gesture for their immense effort every day.

Let’s honour their work, appreciate their sacrifice, and never forget who makes every meal possible.

San José de Palos Blancos is a community located in the municipality of Guasave, in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. It is approximately 14 kilometers east of the city of Guasave, in a region of fertile lands where agriculture and livestock farming have long been the foundation of the local economy.
